It's not a big problem for an Antoni Gaudí to build a cathedral like the Sagrada Familia - you can proof that in Barcelona. If you're not able to finish the project in your own lifetime, you can transfer the problem to the next following generations - if you have patience and perseverance. Gaudí started 1882 and today there are still big cranes working. Don't know, if he smiles, looking down on us from heaven. If you prefer faster solutions, those, you can enjoy in your own lifetime, imitate Loutseu / Gallois Lou: put some wine bottles upside down and let your macro camera creep in the cathedral cave; let the sun shine in - and your cathedral maybe is a better experience than the very expensive project of Gaudí. I think, everybody can construct an own low budget table top cathedral - if you are a wine-drinker...

After hurricane Katrina the city of New Orleans came into my mind instantly and I asked myself, what sort of power gives this region such an energy-loaded cultural identity. This photography of Tom McFarlane is for me like a tribute to New Orleans - I don't know why. I've never been there. Only saw some photos of ships on the Mississippi. Of alligators. Of vehicles, propelling over flat water. HEAT is the title of Tom McFarlanes artful nude composition. Maybe these HEATED atmosphere is typical for New Orleans. And looking on this black and white picture, Cajun music comes into my mind. Like Bluegrass music the Cajun music really seems to burst from vitality . The sound is frequently inked by the accordion, but of course there are also electrical guitars, violins or a National Steel / Dobro in some bands. Besides the everywhere present Afro-American influence the French zest for life is dominantly. The French Acadians in the mid-1700s had been expelled from Canada until they settled in the deep South, nearby the Bayou marshes. On their "Fais Do Do" Saturday evening parties the "Acadians" saved their original joy in life. One should protect this optimism against floods of any type with this music - and with photographies like HEAT, composed by Tom McFarlane...

I wished to make clear by visual (post-processing) methods, that now, after 9/11, we feel different, when we discover a photo of the world trade center.

I tried to work with layers, textures / digital double exposure, but did not succeed in understanding the photo-software. then I got a little help by my friends: Catherine came and made the job: the second version of my helicopter-flight friendly was made for me by katphotos Kat... / Catherine - take a look via viewfinder 1 through an old brownie flash camera viewfinder 2

I'm living side by side with a Tattoo-shop; the owner weeks ago found my purse and wallet on the street - and brought it immediately to me. No money, handy or passport was missing; now we are friends. If I now would encounter a pierced madame on certain suburban streets, I wouldn't feel any fear, would have trust :-) - sometimes, if we loose something, we win on the other hand...

Browsing through BRNO's (Jim Lee's) photo collection in the FLICKR-pool we can discover China today - also the not glamorous. MAO is still a hero there - in a country, that soon will be visited by the world, because they organize the Olympic Games. Still China shows great differences of comfort for people living in rural areas and those in the Mega-Cities; between the educated and the not, sometimes between male and female (via birth controlling experiments); I think, in the moment there is no human being, who is not interested, to ask the question: Where do you go to, China?

During the Gold Rush of the 1840's, people came from all over to settle the rugged country north of San Francisco. Here in Anderson Valley, along what used to be an old stagecoach road used to deliver the U.S. mail by horseback from inland California to the coast, such homesteaders lovingly planted fruit trees around their little house. Although they are long gone, the faithful cherry and peach trees pay tribute to the family's efforts year after year, in a glorious celebration of spring. The cattails growing wild in the foreground add another cheerful note. Although they didn't find gold in these hills the early settlers did discover some of the biggest trees on Earth: the giant redwoods. Many of the homesteaders remained, and started lumber mills or worked in them. The wood was shipped down the coast to build the city of San Francisco.

P.S.:

Rita Crane's father escaped the third Reich, worked as a photographer in New York for the LIFE magazine and the New York Times; his daughter, I'm sure, is now living in a country, where many Germans would like to make some holidays; German dreams performed a song called MENDOCINO - http://www.youtube.com/ -; maybe her German is still good enough to understand the lyrics; I've to admit, the Pacific Ocean feeds dreams more than the North Sea.

Pompeii or Chernobyl, Hiroshima or Dresden, Banda Aceh or New Orleans: Some towns did not come onto the legs after a catastrophe, others rose again. Bombarded or struck by earthquakes, contaminated by radiation or flooded: The inhabitants of every town want the resurrection of her identification object - provided that it is only appropriately feasible. The big fire in Chicago is examined in the book or the earthquake in San Francisco. One looks at the reconstruction of Warsaw and also Berlin after the second World War. Perhaps it makes sense to give up a town like New Orleans, three meters under the sea-level, as a housing area definitely. On the other hand, a tendency of all residents of maltreated towns is to be felt globally, which speaks about to rebuild their symbol object as unchanged as possible. Maybe it is better to manage some variations, considering the presumable future of a city during an alternated reconstruction. Towns are works of art, culture products, how to save their threatened identity? ...

I have just one question -- the one about China. The problem as far as I know is largely female feticide. But I don't think they have dowry murders of young women -- because they don't have the woman's parents giving dowry to the groom. In fact I think it is the opposite for some tribes where the men have to give money to the bride's family. But the Chinese government has said it will control the problem of female feticide now -- and I am sure they will, just as they promised and did control the population. India has controlled neither population nor the genocide of women! Unlike china -- more than half it's people are illiterate, have barely food or drinking water or housing! But India thinks it is going to be a global superpower!!?

Paul Grand has combined a dressmaker's antique mannequin torso by excellent post-processing methods with a lighthouse. Now we can enter that female symbol through the door in the bottom, climb up the stairs inside - till we reach the top of the light-house (and woman); the head is always the cockpit, the center of all outlooks. Could be, that the whole tour upstairs from entrance to the roof top, from having sex till reaching the brightest mind, is a metaphor for the different levels of LOVE-development as well. This composition, a tribute to the art of Man Ray, is modern digital surrealism at his best. Should become as famous as Salvador Dali's walking, burning giraffes, with those furniture-drawers in the body. I've never understood, why an elegant cat-walking giraffe needs furniture-drawers, coming out of her legs. But I surely would enjoy lighthouses on the North-Sea's beaches with such a female silhouette!

And what becomes of these forgotten past glories. Thus, I purposely left the modern horrid French street light. I guess Sigmund Freud would have a field day over this one!

Or does the baby risk a view into the own soul (or belly or throat) only? No one knows exactly. Rita Crane gave the comment to this ANIMAL contest: We recognize consciousness in them from the little ones to the big ones.......they reflect to us the conscious energy of the universe in their eyes and bearings..........and they are so similar to us in so many ways, having similar emotions and desires. one can't help but be moved and feel utter compassion for them, hoping they have good lives and are kindly treated if they are in the company of humans...

What a bout the sexual behaviour of pelicans? Monogam, polygam etc.? I've heard, they are monogam - for one year. More about the "brown pelican" at http://www.birds.cornell.edu/ - there I could read: "It is the only one that plunges from the air into the water to catch its food." The friendly twins were actually shot by "beachwalker" Dieter Schaefer at Coal Oil Point in Goleta, CA. They breed on Santa Cruz Island and often spend the nights there too - but come over to the mainland during the day...

Caught the photography bug as a kid (about 30 years ago) when my mom gave me her old 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 camera to take some pictures during my first vacation; couldn't wait to get something more modern and practical. Until 2004, when I purchased my first digital camera, my photography was mostly limited to vacation and travel.
The digital camera re-ignited my interest in photography; it is like rediscovering photography all over again and I enjoy the freedom of unlimited shots the digital cameras provide. Since 2006 my main area of interest is avian photography - or more precisely avian art - made possible without the purchase of lenses that cost several thousand dollars by the crop factor of the DSLR. I also enjoy working in the digital darkroom - in fact, post processing and image manipulations allow me to create the image I see in my mind - I consider photography an art form and am not merely interested in documenting what the camera saw but to create what I think it should look like or what I feel....

We should add to the three well known dimensions as a fourth one: the TIME. We know, we can't all reach that age of nearly 104 as mentioned by Nganguyen. Even if we would reach the age of 94, we should consider: "What will remain, telling a story about us, when we are dead and gone?" The interior, shot by the Dutch artist Ineke Kamps makes me think this way. There's a philosophy of time: One of the most important thinkers has been Henri Bergson (existentialism). I wrote about him for an amazon-review: Trying to understand the "life melody" of a human being, it is not sufficient, to emerge ridiculously only one or two notes. The entire "SPAN", if possible from the birth to the end of a biography, - only such a span (the complete melody, not a single note) is able to illuminate the secret of a human personality to a sympathizing viewer. Only via this method you can discover the dynamics, movements, changing spirals, the will to carry through, the persistent believe at the own worth of a person... - We tried to work with such an aim, making a portrait of Joseph Winter - both with a photography (by my wife) and with added words (by me). Sometimes we MUST try, to ignore TIME...

The photographer Flea / Emanuela succeeds with a surreal conception, with subtle psychological, archaic, fantastic ideas of body placements: transporting an inner world of feelings into our mainstream world of spectators. The metaphorical, visual messages surprise each sensitive viewer with the fact, that her pictures, already sunken away, suddenly, after weeks are rising again into our current consciousness. With secret intelligence ref. for example to a dead fish, Emanuela like a female S. Dali makes photos unforgettable. The female photographer Flor Garduno, Switzerland & Mexico, she works in a similar style: She uses fishes as a tie or a Cartridge Belt or for the hairs of a "Medusa". A sword fish's head combined with a female nude are applications, which could come out of the mind of the FLICKR-member Emanuela too. Many compositions have a two-piece visual syntax: one symbol is added to a female semi-nude composition. One may dig deeply into the soul's bottom, searching for the meaning of long fishes in the near of female nakedness. However: Flea changes the stupid patterns of nude photography. This business usually is controlled by male photographers. Flea: she is the chance, to discover a new, female point of view! I'm sure, Flea has occasionally a tendency to cynicism. Why not: the photos are better than the thousands without any humor.

The photo was taken up on the "Ginza" in Tokyo. That is one of the noble shopping miles there, like in Germany the "Kö" (Duesseldorf) or the "Friedrichstraße" (Berlin). The outfit of the two ladies is typical for the modern Japan, which is often even a spleen too stylish or fancy. We have even seen women with High Heels mountain walking… There is in Japan on the one hand the simple side of the Zen Buddhism, but on the other hand in conciliation a luxurious counterpart.

The Austrian Wolfgang Hermann, a FLICKR member, a retired surgeon, he seems to me like a perfect descendant of AUGUST SANDER! Gottfried Benn, a famous German poet, was a surgeon too. Maybe the capability to climb a certain level of distance makes the perfect photographer? WOLFGANG HERMANN himself told me: "One learns as a surgeon: to observe, to take up information, to concentrate on the really meaning and to separate from insignificant to the well-being of the whole ..."; Indeed, that seem to be good rules for photographers as well!

a few times in my life I had to sit down on the ground, because my knees got weak, so as my mother had done her suicide or as I had to leave New York again or as I had an heart attack (visiting the city Wuppertal); but then always I was eye to eye with those other animals: birds, little dogs, cats - and I lost my sadness and decided to rise again; just as Paul McCartney sang: Blackbird: take your broken wings and learn to fly... - animals often helped me; they have a philosophical perseverance - and they believe, they will overcome :-)

At first we (my wife and me) thought, this MUST be Tuscany, but then I noticed, that the photographer YARRET lives in Valencia, so I told my wife, that this IS in Spain, not in Italy; but then she read his tags: Quirico, San Quirico, Tuscany? nevertheless: it doesn't matter WHERE it is: Spain, Italy, Germany, Poland, USA: but it is important, that this artwork has the power to bring back our memories of being in a field of gold: once we slept in a wheat field, suddenly wind came, big clouds, thunder, we ran to some to a chapel, which has been surrounded by big trees; the lightning crashed into one of the big trees, but we had been safe in the little chapel; it wasn't in the Tuscany, it was in the Eifel, Germany, near Münstermayfeld; it doesn't matter WHERE it is, but it is important, if you once had feelings like the ones I've described: escaping - after resting in FIELDS OF GOLD...

you can put a mirror or even a linen screen (like Myoung Myoung Ho Lee) in the middle of the country and then organize the reflection of a fine tree in the midst of that square; the country will be the frame; a method, started by Rene Magritte, the famous Surrealist from Belgium; a picture from a picture within a picture - surely a visual metaphor of the human efforts to focus on important things; the whiteboard, the brain-map subculture...; the digital style of continuing this idea is very well produced by _marmota / Eric. he used textures from the FLICKR members Paul Grand, Ineke Kamps and borealnz / Jill.

The pier has been opened 1870. Sometimes large parts were swept away by a storm or were destroyed by fire. In WW II machine guns were installed and today there is a nightclub. Times are a-changing, Bob Dylan would sing, but a pier like this will always overcome. A comment to this photographical artwork in the Flickr-community: "I have been in Eastbourne once, a long time ago....I can't remember seeing this pier." The feedback by the photographer "~JO~" herself: "Eastbourne pier was opened in 1870 so it has been there since then!"

Joseph Winter managed to escape from the 3rd Reich, from the Nazi-KZ's [German concentration camps], left his hometown Stuttgart 1940, joined the US-Army, came back 1944 as an US-soldier [the RITCHIE BOYS], went to the Nazi photo-shop owner, who had robbed his camera 1940, got his camera back, and in the USA again he made many wonderful pictures and won prizes. He even jumped over the Millenium border too; he liked to read his daily New York Times on his 80 acres-farm some miles north of NYC near the Umpachene Falls, Massachusetts - and encouraged my wife and me to love photography... (though we, Germans, talked that language of the murders); Joe Winter's story is in the Steven Spielberg's Shoa Foundation

Mother Hubbard's Ice Box Tom McFarlane, working with his model Samantha, sent as entrance no. #76 into our contest B&W (1) - "Mother Hubbard's Ice Box", this nightly view, lightened by a refrigerator, is a really artwork! More than a usual nude picture can deliver, it presents timelessly a certain mood. Also I can't forget the bathtub-series of Tom McFarlane, shot in a summer garden - or view HEAT (nude with ventilator). Instantly I have been impressed by the close up face portraits (Black on Black, Number 9). What a pity that the photo-stream of Tom is mostly blacked. I've visited the museum of the famous nude photographer Helmut Newton in Berlin - and so I can't understand such a censorship vs. Tom's series, presenting always female beauty - is that a bad thing?

The entire "SPAN", if possible from the birth to the end of a biography, - only such a span (the complete melody, not a single note) is able to illuminate the secret of a human personality to a sympathizing viewer. Only via this method you can discover the dynamics, movements, changing spirals, the will to carry through, the persistent believe at the own worth of a person...

At nearly 104 years old - that's the title, made by Nga Nguyen, Hanoi, Vietnam: a real artwork on the topic PERSEVERANCE (the title of my own book on philosophy). what are the tools to reach such an age? maybe the T.S. Eliot-quotation: "Teach us to care and not to care. Teach us to sit still." I've found that wise words in the book ZEN CAT - maybe we also have to consider, what will remain, when we are dead? the tree we've planted, the house we've built, the children we helped to enter life successfully, the books we've written, the music we played, the photos we've made? maybe nothing - or at least this 500x500-group :-)

point of view is the title, given by the author of this photography, Philippe Sainte-Laudy, once sent to our contest ARCHITECTURE (2); when I can't sleep at night, I'm considering, if I would like to live a week or two in such a room; the location is Andalucia, Poblado del Embalse; I don't want to drive to Spain in the moment, but I enjoy overlooking things. because I once wrote an essay on MONTAIGNE and the tower he liked to live in, I often tried to imagine, how the best writer's building should look alike; maybe not as extreme as this lighthouse; what I must add: do we really like the concept of modern architecture, collecting all the people close to each other in high density? P.S.: ref. reality: this is a water reservoir; once the chimney with that garden-pavilion as a crown has been hidden completely by water; this photo is a serious document on loosing water in Spain too...
